Bläserkammermusik No. 2 for Trumpet, Alto Saxophone, & Bassoon (1932)……................................................................................Ernst-Lothar Von Knorr (1896-1973)
I. Invention
II. Kadenz
III. Slow Fox
IV. Tango
V. Finale
Ernst-Lothar von Knorr was not only a composer, but an active German musician, violin, and music educator. Knorr was a versatile composer, and composed for almost all areas of music, including piano, saxophone, solo voice, and chorus. A set back in Knorr’s compositional career occurred in 1944, when an air raid destroyed most of his manuscripts and compositions that were in print. Knorr was colleagues and friends with composers of the time, such as Paul Hindemith, Richard Strauss, and Igor Stravinsky.
Lamanti: 3 Stycken för Cornet, Alsaxofon och Fagott (1976)..................................................................................................................................Hans Holewa
(1905-1991)
I. Tremando (Trembling)
II. Resignando (Resigned)
III. Disperando (Despairing)
Born in Vienna, Hans Holewa studied conducting, piano and music theory at the Vienna Conservatory. In 1937 he moved to Sweden and began promoting new music, including Anton Webern’s 12-tone. It was not until 1959 that Holewa took to being a composer.
Lamenti is a reflection of events that occurred in the 1940’s. Each movement utilizes the extreme low and high registers of the instruments with the melodic lines being passed to each member of the trio While each movement has a very descriptive picture, Holewa asks that only the performers know the program notes and that the audience’s imagination not be persuaded but allowed to create their own image.
